Featured Artist Interview | DJ Bella Fiasco

Earlier this week our team met up with our girl Dj Bella Fiasco, to chat it up about her current state as one of the hottest female Dj's coming up in the game out of our hometown of Los Angeles, and boy did she have much to say about her come up, what's next and much more.

(Bella Fiasco rockin' our "SMILE YOUR IN CALI CLASSIC TEE")

(L.A Clique) Why “DJ Bella Fiasco”?

(Bella Fiasco) 'Bella Fiasco' is italian for 'Beautiful Disaster' and it's a poem I wrote in literature workshop a long time ago, which is one of my all-time favorite pieces. Ironically, Bella is also my (nick)name in real life. It just worked out perfectly for me.

(L.A Clique) So how did you begin your start as a DJ, can you tell us about it?

(Bella Fiasco) I've always been a huge music junkie. Coming from a musically inclined family, my Dad tried to teach me how to play just about every object that made noise. On my 13th birthday, he bought me a professional DW drum set and I instantly fell in love…Until one day, I came home to a pair of new turntables set up in our music room and my Dad excitedly says "Why don't you try it?" From then on, the rest was a personal exploration into the art of DJ'ing. I taught myself everything I know now just from watching youtube videos hours on out every night. It was as though DJ'ing found me, instead of the other way around. I'm in love… and this time it's real. [winks]

(L.A Clique) Who are your influences and what kind of music do you spin?

(Bella Fiasco) I didn't have particular DJs as influences when I was just getting started, simply because it was quite a foreign world to me. Music in itself was my only influence, I wanted to learn how to spin all kinds of music from all sorts of genres and artists in all varieties of styles and techniques. That's my influence, MUSIC, dead on simple. With that said, I spin everything that has quality- From 80s, 90s, RnB, Hip Hop, House, Electro, Mainstream, all the way back to Classics.

(Bella Fiasco rockin' our "VINTAGE PATRIOT TANK")

(L.A Clique) What keeps you going? and what does it mean to you to be a female DJ in the industry?

(Bella Fiasco) The satisfaction and pleasure I give the people who listen to me spin is what ultimately keeps me going… and of course Redbull (when I need wings). Being a female DJ in the industry to me means STYLE & GRACE (RIP Biggie) - style in skill and presentation, and grace in personality and charisma. The standards for us female DJs are not exactly higher, just way more aggressive since it's still not too common in the game. It's all about flava'!

(L.A Clique) What would you have to say is one of the craziest experiences you have had at a gig?

(Bella Fiasco) I've had one too many! But if I really had to pick one, it would probably be the very first time I made a huge boo-boo during my set. I remember this night perfectly; I was spinning primetime at a well-known club and all of a sudden, the music stops completely and the whole crowd looks up at me screaming "whatever noise hundreds of upset people make together." The needle got caught in my chain necklace. Of course in a state of panic, I didn't know what to do. It took me a good 5 seconds to slap myself back in my senses and drop the needle back in its place. I think only another DJ would understand the terrible feeling… Until now I still have flashbacks of the crowd nearly boo'ing me out of the club! Fashion sure gets me in a lot of trouble [Kanye shrug].

(L.A Clique) With a badd ass hair style like yours, how important is fashion for Miss Bella Fiasco & what inspires your sense of style?

(Bella Fiasco) I must admit, fashion is crucially important in my life. I'm that type who hates to repeat outfits specially when I've already taken pictures in it (ridiculous, I know). My attitude inspires my sense of style; I'm a little tough and rough on the edges, but maintain a taste in class. In summary, I hate pink, 95% of my clothes are black, heels and vintage boots are my obsession, I love red lipstick, and I can never imagine myself with short hair… just bald on one side [laughs].

(Bella Fiasco rockin' our "SMILE YOUR IN CALI CLASSIC TEE")

(L.A Clique) Im sure the fellas would like to know, are you single or taken?

(Bella Fiasco) Single aka MARRIED TO THE GRIND!

(L.A Clique) As a female DJ, we're sure you receive massive attention before, during, and after your gigs; What's the funniest pick up lines someone has shot at you?

(Bella Fiasco) My top 3 would be.."I'm a promoter, I want to book you." Why does everyone suddenly become a promoter when they get a chance to stand by the DJ booth next to me? [laughs].."What's your rate?" What am I a prostitute? [laughs] And finally "I own a clothing company & you would look great in my clothes, can I take pictures of you?" Shout out to Boogs from L.A Clique who approached me the right way ;)

(L.A Clique) Do you have any tips for women out there trying to break into the DJ industry?

(Bella Fiasco) Always a good question; Just in general, if you're pursuing to become a DJ, my best advice is ALWAYS CATER TO YOUR CROWD. I know most of you feel as though DJs "play whatever they want" because we have the control to, but a real DJ's job is to provide listening pleasure to the audience before him/herself. Play what they want to hear, not what you want to play. As for any females out there thinking of stepping up to the plate, consider yourself one with the guys. Staying in your lane as a "female DJ" limits the aptitude of your skill. If you're a DJ, you're a DJ… gender generalization is unnecessary. But if it has to come down to utilizing your gender to get where you want, by all means, just make sure it compromises with your talent to say the least.

(Bella Fiasco rockin' our "ORIGINAL GANGSTER V-NECK")

(L.A Clique) Interesting facts about you that most people might not know?

(Bella Fiasco) - I'm an artist, I've joined and won several art competitions for my paintings and drawings..I have a collection of old notebooks where I used to write all my poetry..People always compliment me on the way I smell, well I love using men's cologne..I have pretty bad hearing and I would like to blame DJ'ing for that..I have a very, very close relationship with my family..I don't like receiving roses and chocolates, men need to be more creative than that to get through to me..French fries is the way to my heart ;)

(L.A Clique) Whats next for DJ Bella Fiasco? And where can people rock with you? Any residencies?

(Bella Fiasco) Just watch me ;) I spin at different clubs every night of the week. Stay connected through my facebook here or follow me on Twitter @DJBellaFiaso

(L.A Clique) Any Shoutouts/ Recognitions?

(Bella Fiasco) BIG UPS to the promoters who saw my potential since day one and brought me in the scene without ever doubting my skill, to my friends who I share the fun and wild memories with, to all my real supporters who respect my hustle and believe in my potential, to Blend Artists Management (who I very recently signed with) for giving me the opportunity to become a member of such a strong and dedicated team, to my parents and little sister for their unconditional love and being my number one fans, to my Lola for her spirited support that lives in my heart and memory now and forever (Rest In Paradise) and lastly, to the Big Guy above for all the doors he continues to open for me. One love! And a specia Big shoutout to L.A Clique! You guys rock! ;)

The New York Times | A Week with Pharrell Williams

Multifaceted singer, songwriter and designer Pharrell Williams was recently chosen as a style consultant alongside storied music composer Hans Zimmer for the 2012 Academy Awards. Williams’ numerous endeavors have plummeted him onto the radar of many well-known productions, films, culture and music acts alike – not the least of these is the recent Academy Awards honor. Bee-Shyuan Chang of The New York Times recently spent seven days with the Miami-based artist, dropping in on his day-to-day activities leading up to the Oscar ceremony. View a small excerpt below.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 15 In Miami, it’s usually warm, but I’m mostly indoors. I started off my day wearing a Billionaire Boys Club white crew neck T-shirt, blue denim jeans and SpongeBob SquarePants toe socks. I love SpongeBob; I just think he’s funny. Squidward is my favorite, though. If he was a human, I would hang out with him. I had a photo shoot scheduled with my good friend Nigo for his brand Human Made and we decided to have the shoot at my apartment. I modeled a lot of the clothes, which pay homage to the very early Levi’s cuts, and ended up really loving these striped shorts. They were simple but the fit was awesome. I tried to take it from Nigo, but he said he needed it.

After the shoot, I headed to the studio to meet up with Diplo. Kept on the jeans and changed into a blue flannel shirt, black N.E.R.D. logo skullcap and my custom Timberland six-inch black leather boots. I drew on the boots with white and red Sharpie paint pens. It’s a bit American mall rat- and punk-influenced: some cartoon graphics and a small Chanel CC logo. After, I stopped by one of my favorite stores in Miami, the Webster. The owners have great taste and they carry Chanel. I’m a really big fan.

THURSDAY, FEB. 16 A very rare day off. Aside from a few conference calls, I spent it at home with my family, so just put on a Gap white V-neck T-shirt, gray sweat pants and my oversized Mickey Mouse yellow slippers.

FRIDAY, FEB. 17 Off to New York for a photo shoot. I wore my black leather jacket: a biker style and a collaboration between Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons and Vanson. Nigo introduced me to Junya Watanabe’s designs a few years ago and I’ve liked Junya’s sensibility ever since: out of the box, but not trying too hard. I added a blue and red flannel shirt and a black skullcap. Our next destination was L.A. To prevent myself from getting sick on the plane, I wrapped a Junya plaid and camouflage print scarf around my neck.

Weezy disses Jay-Z & Yeezy’s “Watch the throne” What?!

Here we go again. Hours before Lil Wayne and the Throne face off in the Grammy battle for Best Rap Album at Sunday night's (February 12) awards show, Weezy threw shots during YMCMB's pre-Grammy party in Los Angeles on Saturday night. After receiving some new sales plaques for his wall, announcing that he had signed R&B singer Christina Milian and paying homage to the late Whitney Houston, Wayne dropped an a cappella freestyle directed at Jay-Z and Kanye West. "I met a bad red bone, I took the bi--- home/ I asked her what she want to watch, she said, 'Surely not the Throne,' " Weezy spit before he dropped the mic and moseyed offstage, according to Rap Radar.

Things began to sour after a 2009 interview in which Cash Money CEO Bryan "Birdman" Williams objected to Jay-Z taking the crown for MTV News' "Hottest MCs in the Game" list for that year. "I don't think he the #1 MC, in no kinda way," Baby said, casting the first stone. "Wayne is the best, he do the most and he make the most money. I don't think no n---a in the business make more money than us."

Jay returned fire at the top of 2011. On the Throne's "H.A.M.," Jigga made it clear that not only was Birdman, a.k.a. Baby, and Wayne not holding any Hov-caliber bucks, but that financially they couldn't even compare to his wife, Beyoncé. "I'm like, 'Really, half-a-billi?' N---a, really, you got Baby money/ Keep it real with n---as, n---as ain't got my lady money," Jay rhymed.

Not to be outdone, Weezy waited a few months, but responded in August of last year on "It's Good," a track from his Tha Carter IV LP, which also featured Jadakiss and Drake. "Talkin' 'bout Baby money? I got your Baby money/ Kidnap yo' bitch, get that how-much-you-love-your-lady money," Wayne rapped in direct response to Jay's "H.A.M." line.

Hova didn't seem too bothered by the line. In an October interview with MTV News, Jay brushed off Weezy's shot on "It's Good." "That's sport, that's rap music," Jay said. "Nothing is going to change but the participants."

On Christmas Day, Tunechi and Jay's Throne partner, Kanye West, were spotted together at an L.A. Lakers basketball game, so the rap tit-for-tat can't be too serious. However, it will be interesting to see if either Jay or Yeezy respond to Wayne's latest jab. Whatever the case, if either the Throne or Weezy win the Best Rap Album award at the Grammys, you can bet the hip-hop world will be paying extra special attention to the acceptance speech.
